How do you design a space for a technology whose future applications have yet to be imagined?

Google Goleta begins with that question. Conceived as a home for advanced research, fabrication, and the evolving possibilities of quantum computing, the project transforms the familiar architecture of a Southern California suburban technology campus into an environment built around experimentation.

The design draws from the spirit of the workshop: a place where thinking and making are inseparable. There is something deliberately familiar in this idea, somewhere between a backyard woodshed, an artist’s studio, and a highly advanced laboratory. Wood, steel, glass, exposed structure, industrial systems, and sophisticated fabrication technologies coexist rather than compete. The physical act of making becomes a counterpoint to the increasingly immaterial nature of computation.

Instead of relying on wholesale architectural transformation, the project works through a series of focused interventions. A new stair connects two levels while doubling as informal seating and a communal forum. An indoor climbing wall turns circulation into activity. Plywood walls are engraved with layered graphics inspired by scientific, technological, and natural systems, while dimensional wood surfaces recall the intricate structures found in bristlecone pinecones. Murals and illuminated artworks move through laboratories, corridors, and gathering spaces, bringing color, scale, and human expression into an intensely technical environment.

The design operates across scales, from the micron to the campus. Details invite close inspection while larger spatial gestures establish connections between research, fabrication, collaboration, and social life. Art is not treated as decoration applied after the architecture, but as another system embedded within it.

Because emerging technology is inherently a work in progress, adaptability became fundamental to the architecture. MEP and technical infrastructure are coordinated as flexible, plug-and-play systems capable of evolving alongside research. Much of this complexity is carefully integrated into the building, allowing the tactile materials, artwork, and communal spaces to define the experience rather than the machinery required to support it.

Google Goleta ultimately treats the workplace as an instrument for curiosity: part laboratory, part workshop, part social space. It is architecture designed not around a predetermined future, but around the possibility of discovering one.
