Revello Residence

Revello Residence began with an extraordinary landscape and an ordinary house. Set on a steep and highly constrained Southern California hillside overlooking the Pacific, the existing 1980s residence occupied a remarkable site without fully engaging it. The transformation began by reconsidering the house through the qualities already present: topography, horizon, coastal light, and expansive views of the ocean.

Rather than simply remodeling the existing architecture, the project reorganizes the experience of the site. The vehicular approach, orientation, and entry sequence are carefully choreographed so the ocean is initially withheld, then gradually revealed. From the restrained street-facing arrival, the architecture opens toward the Pacific, turning movement through the house into a progression between enclosure and expansive coastal views.

Structural reinforcement of the hillside allowed the program to be layered vertically into the terrain. Office and exercise spaces, sleeping areas, and living and entertaining spaces occupy distinct levels tucked into the slope. This sectional organization works with the hillside rather than against it, allowing the residence to maintain a measured presence from the street while opening dramatically toward the landscape.

At the living level, architecture and landscape become increasingly intertwined. Large expanses of glass frame the coastline while sliding openings extend interior rooms onto terraces, gardens, dining areas, and outdoor gathering spaces. These exterior rooms are conceived as an extension of the house rather than an accessory to it. Fire, planting, furniture, architecture, and the horizon come together to create a landscape for everyday life.

Inside, an elegant but casual palette of natural materials reinforces this connection. Warm wood cabinetry and paneling, stone, glass, textured fabrics, and restrained architectural detailing provide a tactile counterpoint to the openness of the coastal setting. Carefully framed views appear throughout the residence, from the bedroom and bath to the kitchen and dining spaces, allowing changing light, weather, and the Pacific horizon to become part of the interior.

Revello Residence ultimately transforms the limitations of a difficult hillside site into the defining character of the home. Architecture recedes where the landscape should dominate and becomes precise where enclosure, privacy, and shelter are required. The result is a distinctly Southern California residence shaped not simply by an ocean view, but by the experience of living within the landscape itself.
