Nine Fold House

The Nine Fold House is an exploration of architecture shaped by geology, climate, and the enduring relationship between art and the natural world. Situated within the foothills of Montecito, the residence responds to a landscape that has been continuously transformed over millions of years by the collision of the Pacific and North American tectonic plates. Rather than resisting these forces, the architecture acknowledges them, creating a home that exists in dialogue with an environment defined by movement, light, and change.

Concrete becomes both structure and narrative. Cast with a richly textured finish, the material anchors the house to the hillside while expressing qualities of permanence, weight, and craft. Folded planes project from the landscape, carving protected courtyards, framing expansive views of the Pacific Ocean, and opening the home to the changing light of Southern California. The architecture is simultaneously grounded and weightless, where massive forms appear to float above gardens and terraces, creating moments of compression and release throughout the sequence of spaces.

The organization of the residence is intentionally porous. Rather than forming a single enclosed object, the house is composed of distinct volumes separated by gardens, courtyards, and shaded outdoor rooms. This composition allows the landscape to move through the architecture, blurring the distinction between interior and exterior while fostering a lifestyle centered on California's temperate climate. Olive trees, citrus groves, native grasses, and the surrounding hillside become extensions of the living environment rather than its backdrop.

The underlying geometry emerges from a disciplined grid that is selectively carved through a series of folded planes and abstract screen-like interventions. Solid and void work together to shape space, allowing light and shadow to animate the concrete surfaces throughout the day while creating carefully framed relationships between architecture, art, and landscape.

Designed as both a resilient home and a place for living with art, the Nine Fold House reflects a broader understanding of architecture as part of California's evolving landscape. Rather than attempting to dominate nature, the residence embraces its setting, recognizing that permanence is achieved not through resistance, but through harmony with the powerful geological and environmental forces that continue to shape the land.
